
Stop Overdoing It: How to Pick the Right Infrared Heat for Your Bathroom
I see it all the time. Engineers get a bit too enthusiastic and throw a massive heating lamp into a tiny bathroom. It seems like a good idea—more power, more heat, right? Wrong. All you’re doing is wasting electricity and putting a weird amount of stress on the circuit. The secret to a bathroom that actually feels cozy (without costing a fortune) is simply matching the wattage to the size of the room.
Getting the Power Right
Here is the thing about infrared: you aren’t trying to heat the air. You’re heating the person. If you’re dealing with a small powder room—something under 4 square meters—a 400W to 600W short-wave lamp is plenty. It’s a gentle, steady warmth. But if you’re stepping up to a master bath (around 6 to 10 square meters), you’ll want to either use a few lamps together or jump up to those 800W–1200W units. Just be careful. If you put too much power in a small space, you get these annoying “hot spots.” The person in the shower feels like they’re standing under a heat gun, so they keep flicking the switch on and off. Do that enough, and you’ll burn out your relays way faster than they should go.
Humidity and Heat
Since we’re talking about bathrooms, IP66 ratings are a must. No shortcuts here. You need that sealed housing to keep steam and splashes away from the quartz glass and filaments. Otherwise, you’re just asking for a short circuit. We love short-wave tech because it’s instant. You flip the switch, and you feel it immediately. No waiting around for the room to “warm up.” But a word of caution: high wattage means high heat density right at the surface of the lamp. If you’re squeezing a 1500W lamp into a tight ceiling recess, give it some breathing room. You don’t want your other fixtures overheating just because the lamp is working hard.
Finding the Sweet Spot
It’s a bit of a trade-off. Lower wattage lamps tend to run cooler and generally last longer. High-wattage ones hit you with heat faster, but they push the filaments to the limit. For most commercial jobs, I usually suggest a zoned approach. Use medium-wattage lamps and pair them with a timer. It keeps the space warm and welcoming, but it stops the equipment from burning itself out. Simple.
