
Why Your Patio Heaters Keep Dying (And How to Stop It)
If you’ve ever run a bar or a restaurant with an outdoor patio, you know the deal. Your heaters are fighting a losing battle against salt air, rain, and wild temperature swings. Usually, when a heater quits, people blame the heating element. But here’s the real secret: the element is rarely the problem. The real culprit is the spot where the lead wire connects to the quartz tube.
The “Invisible” Leak
Cheap heaters try to cut corners here. They’ll use a bit of basic adhesive or some low-grade silicone to plug the gap. It looks fine at first. But then the heater kicks on. The quartz tube expands. Then it cools down and shrinks. Do that a few hundred times, and you get these tiny, microscopic gaps. Moisture creeps in. Once water hits a live wire at those temperatures, things go south fast. The insulation burns, the wire oxidizes, and—pop—you’ve got a short circuit.
Doing it Right
We take a different approach because we’re tired of seeing units fail. Instead of just “plugging a hole,” we use glass-to-metal seals or ceramic potting compounds. The trick is that these materials expand and contract at the same rate as the quartz. The seal stays tight, no matter how many times you flip the switch. We also don’t mess around with the wiring. We use FEP or silicone jackets. They don’t get brittle or crack when the heat gets intense. They just hold up.
A Quick Heads-Up on Installation
There is one catch. Because these seals are so heavy-duty, the wire assembly is a bit stiffer. Don’t bend these wires at sharp angles. If you kink the lead during install, you might crack that seal, which basically undoes all the hard work we put into it. Just leave a little slack in your wiring harness so the metal has room to breathe as it heats up. It’s a small detail, but it’s the difference between a heater that lasts for years and one that gives you “mysterious” electrical headaches every single season. Keep the water out, keep the power in, and you’re good to go.
